Ben Porter

Ben is the youngest of the three Porter Brothers and has been fortunate to have two ideal role models to inspire him every day. Like Josh and Oli, Ben was introduced to Woking Gymnastics Club through the Kinder Gym programme, and like Oli, went along with his brother from a very young age. Ben demonstrated an incredible level of physical aptitude from this young age and showed enormous potential in other sports including football and tennis. Ben was that child at school who seemed to be good at every sport he tried!

Ben’s incredible work ethic and competitive nature shone through from a very young age and he soon gained a reputation for effort and commitment. As well as his brothers to look up to, Ben had a very talented team mate to train alongside and under the guidance of his personal coach, Craig Woodhams, Ben started his competitive gymnastics journey on the front foot.

Ben started competing in 2017, and was soon earning multiple medals in competitions across the country. Ben and his team mate frequently occupied the top two positions on the podium.

Ben’s first attempt at the National Elite Grade Finals in Birmingham ended in a 14th place position. Although Ben and his coach felt that Ben could have performed better, Ben was still invited to the GB Foundation Squad trials in Lilleshall. Ben didn’t earn a place in the GB Squad but was rewarded with a place in the England Squad. This ensured that Ben could attend his training camps alongside his big brother Josh!

Ben worked extra hard throughout 2019 and was soon earning more medals and regional titles. Ben’s attention to detail and work ethic, alongside his competitive spirit and drive to succeed spurred him onto a higher level of gymnastics, and by the end of the year, Ben achieved a much improved 3rd place at the National Elite Grade finals. This improved result saw another invite for Ben to trial for the GB Foundation Squad, which he successfully achieved.

Ben’s hunger and desire to compete grew, and following the break for COVID, Ben really started to excel. Ben started to perform at the highest levels and started to pick up medals in all the major national competitions, including the British U14 title and Max Whitlock U14 title in 2022. This earned Ben a call up to represent GB at the Berlin Cup, which again he performed exceptionally well in, picking up a host of medals.

Ben repeated his achievement of winning the British U14 title again in 2023, and earned a place in the Top Junior squad. Now competing in the U16 age group as one of the youngest gymnasts, Ben is still thriving in all his competitions whilst battling against the aches and pains of a growing gymnast.

Ben is exceptional on vault , and performs very well on floor, high bar and parallel bars. Ben has a very exciting future as an all around gymnast!
